By , Stark had undertaken three dangerous journeys in the western region of Iran, becoming the first European woman to explore the southern Arabian deserts in During her travels, Stark extensively documented her experiences and published several books recounting her captivating adventures.

She later documented her experiences in the books "Letters from Syria" and "East is West" In , at the age of 54, Freya Stark married Stewart Perowne, although their marriage was short-lived, and they separated in without formally divorcing. She then moved to London and worked as a censor of international correspondence. In , Stark took her first trip to the East and traveled to Beirut, Lebanon.

Much of her journey was in secret, on a donkey, with a Druze guide and an Englishwoman. Travel was not allowed in the region due to the Mandate for Syria and Lebanon.
