With the money received from the people, the Maharaj used to build schools, dharamsalas, hospitals and animal dwellings in the villages. After cleaning the villages, he used to organize kirtan in the evening and spread philanthropy and social welfare to the people through his kirtans. At the time of his kirtans, he used to educate people against the feelings of superstition.
He also used couplets of Saint Kabir in his kirtans. Sant Gadge Maharaj used to stop people from committing atrocities on animals and he did not believe in the spirit of caste discrimination and apartheid in the society and he used to make people aware against it. And they wanted to ban alcohol in the society. Gadge Maharaj used to teach people the lessons of hard work, simple living and the spirit of philanthropy and always asked to help the needy.
He also asked his wife and his children to follow the same path. Maharaj had also met spiritual master Maihar Baba several times. Maihar Baba also described Sant Gadge Maharaj as one of his favorite saints. Maharaj also invited Maihar Baba to Pandharpur and on 6 November thousands of people took darshan of Maihar Baba and Maharaj together. And the villagers who keep their villages clean are given this award.
Poverty, lack of education, and the caste system were some things he paid special attention to. He worked hard to help the poor and those on the outside of society by building schools and other social programs. Even so, he always had a strong desire to help people and make the world a better place. As a social reformer, he started out by going to villages in rural Maharashtra and talking to people about their problems.
He quickly saw people not being able to read or write caused many of these problems or not getting enough education. So, he put most of his energy into improving education for poor people in the area. To do this, Gadge Baba set up a lot of schools and programs to teach people. He thought that education was the best way to give people power and make their lives better.
His schools differed from regular schools because they focused on hands-on learning and training for jobs. He knew that most of the poor farmers and workers he was trying to help needed skills that would help them make a living. So, he set up schools where people could learn several skills, like farming, carpentry, tailoring, and other trades.
This method worked very well, and many of his students were successful farmers, artists, and small business owners. In cities, he built schools and other places. He thought everyone should be able to get an education, so he also opened schools in cities and towns. The son of a poor man can also obtain many degrees. Ambedkar used to meet him frequently and discuss social reform.
Babasaheb Ambedkar had described him as the greatest servant of the people after Jyotirao Phule. Maharaj died on 20 December on his way to Amravati , on the banks of river Pedhi near Walgaon. This programme awards prizes to villagers, who maintain clean villages. The postal department of India had honored Gadge Maharaj by issuing a commemorative stamp in his name.
